Crime is news. The events, causes, and effects of crimes interest people. Usually crimes have undeniable societal significance.
      As news items, crimes are sensitive, requiring good taste and precision.
      Some of the most difficult decisions in an editorial office involve stories concerning the perpetrators and victims of crimes.

Finland has strong traditions in protecting the privacy of crime victims. Journalistic guidelines oblige those in the profession to protect the identity of victims of crimes of a sensitive nature.
      Information must also not be disclosed about perpetrators if that information might reveal the identity of such a victim. The next of kin must also not be made to suffer additional grief.
      This past week a couple of crimes have been covered in the news, in which the coverage has deviated from the familiar pattern.

As part of the Colorado Meth Project, the Brush Rotary Club will host a public educational program on the dangers of methamphetamine use next week. The club will host a meet-and-greet session at 6:30 p.m., and the program will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, at Brush Middle School, 401 Howard St.

Due to the sensitive nature of the program, free child-care service will be available on site.

Whelp, it’s time to enforce that stupid law where you pull over all the Mexican looking peoples.

During the next two weeks, Mesa police officers will be required to watch the state’s 90-minute training video on how to enforce Senate Bill 1070. They will undergo as many as five hours of additional in-house training, Police Chief Frank Milstead said. “1070 is going to be a challenge for the police department,” he said. “It’s very complex, and there are a number of things an officer can do incorrectly. We are going to do everything in our power to follow the spirit of the law.” Milstead said the sensitive nature of the law and several months of debate could leave officers open to claims of racial profiling.

So for you kids at home — passing a law encouraging racial profiling could open up officers to claims of doing just that.
You could say we just hate freedom for Arizonans. But we don’t so you’d be wrong.

She’s hot and getting more press than a real life James Bond or Austin Powers sidekick might.

She “loved wild sex.” Anya Kuschenko met her husband Alex Chapman at a 2001 rave in England. He was instantly “infatuated.”

The alleged spy’s former hubby claims Anna Chapman had a penchant for whips and nipple clamps. He said they once enjoyed a mile-high sex romp aboard a Moscow-bound flight.

“I found her Russian accent such a turn-on,” said the 30-year-old psychologist trainee. “We were having so much fun. We also experimented with sex toys.”

And now back to the true sensitive nature of newsreporting and storytelling. You can’t expect to quote government officials without them begging for anonymity on claims of “sensitive nature.” In this case, the topic is “fools,” or, whether or not Shanghai is chock-full-o-spies.

China says it’s an “opportunity to showcase great achievements and diverse cultures,” but the World’s Expo, which opens in Shanghai on Friday night, is also an opportunity for China to spy on Americans and even recruit new intelligence sources, according to current and former U.S. officials.

“Are people who go to the Expo potential targets for espionage? I think you’d be a fool to think otherwise,” said one U.S. official, who asked not to be identified due to the sensitive nature of the topic.

But it’s not just the sensitive nature of fools and espionage that’s the concern — it’s apparently sensitive, hi-tech, Get Smart-like gadgets that some World Expo-goers are really worried about:

“These public venues are laden with opportunities for foreign collectors to interact with U.S. experts and glean information regarding dual-use and sensitive technologies,” said a 2008 report issued by the U.S. intelligence community to Congress.

Still awaiting word on whether or not those with sensitive palates might experience elevated bouts of paranoia.

Ah, modern journalism. Here’s basically a discussion involving Apple and the FTC taking place through the media — happy as can be to take anyone’s statement and publish it anonymously, without attribution, and in this case, head an entire paragraph “Declining to Comment.”

May 4 (Bloomberg) — U.S. antitrust enforcers are considering an investigation of Apple Inc. following a complaint from Adobe Systems Inc., according to people familiar with the matter.
Adobe says Apple is stifling competition by barring developers from using Adobe’s products to create applications for iPhones and iPads, said the people who spoke on condition of anonymity because they aren’t authorized to discuss the case.

Google Street View will always create privacy concerns no matter what. There are entire blogs devoted to exposing mischievous snapshots that the roving Google Street View cameras have caught. But the EU is going to try to regulate this:

Google should react more quickly to requests that images and data be deleted for privacy reasons, as well as “taking positive measures to avoid capturing images of a sensitive nature.”

Designed to be simple and useful, the Dashboard summarizes data for each product that you use (when signed in to your account) and provides you direct links to control your personal settings.”

We’re not about to delve inside Mike Arrington as that could rile his temper. But I never thought I’d see a “sensitive nature” cop-out in a TechCrunch post. While TechCrunch is known to ignore media embargoes and publish rumors without confirmation, it’s never been known to quote the faceless due to sensitive nature. Until now — Apparently the TechCrunch audience must be shielded from various truths as a result of its own collective sensitive nature. Hrm…

The reality: I can’t repeat here what I wrote on Twitter because of the sensitive nature of the TechCrunch audience, but I will say this. The HP DreamScreen is possibly the biggest piece of crap to ever grace my desk….

Now that’s an opinion not to be confused with reporting. Especially from one with an admittedly “huge conflict of interest” [CrunchPad].

It was July 2003 when Kobe Bryant was accused of persuading a concierge at hotel outside Vail, Colo., to come to his room. Now it is July 2009 when Ben Roethlisberger is accused of persuading a concierge at Nevada hotel to come to his room.

ESPN was all over the Kobe story, sending reporters and attorneys from Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. as the trial unfolded. Maybe Roethlisberger never comes to trial. Maybe he doesn’t deserve to come to trial — although then again, possibly he does. But why the shift in ESPN’s approach?

“Based on the sensitive nature of the story and other factors we mentioned,” ESPN’s Bill Hoffheimer told Pro Football Talk “we initially exercised caution and did not report it.”

That philosophy is admirable, except it runs counter to the very existence of ESPN which, while most of the time doing a fine job, rarely can be described as exercising caution.

An American-born al-Qaida recruit trained to become a suicide bomber before he was captured in Pakistan last year, law enforcement officials said Thursday.

Bryant Neal Vinas learned how to use a suicide vest, according to the law enforcement officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

Pakistani authorities nabbed the 26-year-old New Yorker last year in the city of Peshawar near the border of Afghanistan. Law enforcement officials have refused to say exactly when, but a person familiar with the case said Vinas was picked up in November. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.

Vinas was also interviewed this year in New York by prosecutors in Belgium pursuing an anti-terror case involving Malika El Aroud, said an official at the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the case. El Aroud is the widow of a man involved in killing anti-Taliban warlord Ahmed Shah Massoud two days before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
